April 26: Southern Finland tour – Muuratsalo 1
We had special permission to tour the grounds of Aalto's getaway house nearby in Muuratsalo, built in 1953. Muuratsalo is another island, directly south of Säynätsalo.
Up by the road above.
The path is boardwalked for a ways due to wet ground.
A first look at the house.
The front door.
The way into the courtyard.
The house is called the Experimental House because Aalto et al. used its surfaces for a bunch of cool masonry experiments, as see here.
An Aaltoid wave out of brick.
And more, with a weird old chimney lurking beyond.
The Mortar Variations
Bird poop? Seedhead fibers? Not sure anymore.
Nice patio variations as well.
A view of the house from the lake side, with the courtyard at right.
A glimpse of the house back along the ridge.
Down to the side dock area.
Let's go skating!
The sauna crouches in wait behind the birches.
Another rock ridge.
On the way to the sauna, still patiently waiting.
The sauna, which ingeniously uses the accumulated natural taper of the side logs to attain its roof slope.
The sauna's cool-off dip spot, probably.
Sauna front porch.
Do I spy another butterfly/spider/whatever truss like at the Town Hall?
