May 13: Uspenski Cathedral
After months of intentions, I finally paid Uspenski a visit. — Note: the edits below are all from 5/13/20.
0861
There were some way baroque semi-rainclouds around that did some sprinkles on the walk over.
0863
Up the cathedral hill.
0868
The cathedral, drenched in sky drama.
0872
The apse.
0875
Rather impressive columns.
0880
Sun shenanigans.
0889
Votive candles; the surface is oiled.
0890
So much gold!
0893
Spying on a side spire.
0895
Saints in the shadows.
0899
The dome. The diffused sunlight is quite lovely. — Edit: is that writing on the arch Old Church Slavonic? Not sure, but the style looks like it.
0902
A group of Russian tourists coming to check it out. — Edit: that's gotta be Torni on the skyline.
0903
Sun reach.
0904
The brick craftsmanship is just spectacular.
0907
Raincloud vs. cathedral.
0910
The cathedral in the process of getting sprinkled on. — Edit: getting sunshowered on, for that matter.
0911
Gold, copper, and bricks.
0912
The bell tower.
0913
It looks like a cloud! Wow!
0916
You can see the city panorama in the onions, a little.
0917
This is the back side of the big old brick wharfy building below Uspenski; this greenhouse/terrace construction was always rather intriguing.
0931
More bricks.
0935
Shadow bricks.
0945
The little park by the cathedral, getting all flowery. — Edit: namely with squills!
0950
A glimpse of Aeolus and Luotsikatu.
0955
Some high contrast along Kruunuvuorenkatu.
0961
Back in Merisotilaantori, more weather contrast.
