July 27: Casa Amatller
Casa Battló and the adjacent building, Casa Amatller, are both part of the Illa de la Discòrdia ("Block of Discord"), a block comprising several important houses by prominent Modernista architects, so named because of the stylistic clashes between the buildings. Casa Amatller was designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch and completed in 1900.
Unfortunately the front was under restoration at that point, but I was able to go inside anyway.
A most atmospheric of stairs.
The radiant skylight over the stairwell.
A closeup on the tiling pattern.
A corbelled corner niche.
The windows around the top of the stairwell.
A lovely stove.
And a lovely sink.
The central lightwell, populated by partly stained-glass casements.
A vivid bottle-glass screen, the function of which I'm having trouble inferring.
